Business gas prices largely depend on multiple factors including wholesale gas prices, the location of your business premises, gas consumption and the length of your contract.

Whilst many things impact business gas rates, a company selecting a fixed-rate contract for 2 years will likely be offered a cheaper business gas tariff in comparison to a 1-year contract.

Whilst you may not want to tie yourself into a long business energy contract, they usually offer cheaper business gas prices. However, this isn't always the case as business energy costs can increase if wholesale prices are unstable.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How Are Business Gas Rates Calculated?

Business gas prices are calculated differently from domestic customers. They can be affected by several different things including:

    • Business location
    • Size of business premises
    • Current spend on business gas
    • Overall consumption levels
    • Type of business gas meter
    • Wholesale energy market activity

It is getting much more difficult to get a better business gas deal with increasing prices. Wholesale gas prices are rising, causing business gas providers to increase prices. Despite increasing wholesale gas prices, it remains best practice to secure the best business gas deal possible through comparing business energy suppliers.

  • When Is The Best Time To Switch Business Gas?

You can only switch to a new business gas contract once your current agreement has come to an end. However, many renewal windows open much earlier, and your new agreement can be secured months in advance.

Most businesses renew in April or October during the second and fourth quarters of the year. Prices tend to be more competitive during these months. As the volume of quotes peaks, the demand improves industry competitiveness.

If your contract is coming to an end, then complete a business energy quote for your meters. If you’d prefer to speak to an advisor, then call us on 0800 002 9822 for transparent quotes.

  • Can I Switch Without Penalty?

You can only switch to a new business gas tariff once you're at the end of your contract. Often you can lock in a new contract up to 12 months before the contract end date. This renewal window varies by supplier.

If you're not classed as a micro-business you will need to be aware of when your business gas contract is coming to an end. Most suppliers will roll you onto an expensive out of contract tariff. These are usually the supplier's most expensive gas rates.

Switching business gas should be a priority for every business. It could save you 55% on your renewal letter offer.

  • How Long Does It Take To Switch Business Gas Suppliers?

The process usually takes 4-6 weeks. Switching business gas is more complicated than domestic customer switches so it may take a little longer.

When you switch with us, we will always keep you up to date with our innovative online tracker.

  • What Are Automatic Renewals?

If you're a micro-business, your business gas supplier is obliged to send you a reminder of your upcoming renewal. Some suppliers will send these reminders to all businesses no matter the size, but this isn't guaranteed.

Your reminder should arrive at least 60 days before the end of your gas contract is due to expire. It is a good idea to mark it in your calendar to ensure you are not automatically renewed onto a more expensive deal.

  • Should I Change My Gas Supplier If I'm Moving Business Premises?

It is possible to take your business contract with you, but moving premises offers a rare opportunity to end your contract early. Before you decide to do this, you should compare current business gas prices to see if you can get a cheaper deal.

If you decide to take your business gas supplier with you, a dedicated team should guide you through the process to ensure your transition into your new premises is smooth.

  • How To Read A Business Gas Meter?

It depends on which type of gas meter you have. There are two options, digital and dial.

Digital – you read the numbers from left to right as standard. You should ignore any digits after the decimal point and any red numbers.

Dial – you also read the numbers from left to right. If the pointer is between any number, you should always choose the lower number. You should also ignore ant red numbers on this meter.

  • How Do I Get Cheaper Business Gas Rates?

Using a comparison service is the quickest and easiest way to find competitive business gas quotes. Energy costs can fluctuate daily, so it is a good idea to compare business gas rates regularly to see if you can get a better deal.

If wholesale gas prices are lower than usual, or you expect them to surge soon, you should consider checking to see if your renewal window is open to secure the best business gas prices you can.

  • What Is An MPRN Number?

Your MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number) is a unique number that identifies your gas supply. This helps your energy supplier track gas usage to your business and differentiates it from other meters.
