Compare energy prices

Ovo Energy was established in 2009 as a new independent entrant into the domestic energy market. This was great news for customers as it provided more choice and competition. By early 2020, the company acquired SSE which made them one of the ‘Big Six’ energy companies in the UK. Ovo had previously acquired Spark Energy and took over their customers.

The company puts a lot of emphasis on its sustainability credentials and offers 100% renewable electricity tariffs and has a tree-planting scheme tied to its customer acquisition.

A Guide To Ovo

Ovo has had its headquarters in Bristol since being founded by Stephen Fitzpatrick in 2009. They employ nearly 2,000 employees across the UK and have 1.5 million domestic customers.

Ovo has a rating of 4.3 out of 5 stars on the customer feedback website Trustpilot. This review is based on over 48,000 reviews at the time of writing. Over 70% of reviews are rated ‘Excellent’ and 8% are bad.

Price And Tariffs

Ovo Energy does not currently offer business energy tariffs, only domestic contracts at the current time.

Dual fuel, fixed-term, standard variable and prepayment tariffs are available. All of Ovo’s tariffs are sold as ‘green’ tariffs. Ovo offers carbon-neutral gas tariffs and 100% renewable electricity contracts.

Green Performance

Ovo Energy provides electricity from the National Grid, like all the UK’s energy suppliers. They offer 100% renewable electricity, which means the electricity they provide is supported by Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin certificates (REGOs) and a proportion of their energy comes from renewable energy sources.

Ovo provide services to help customers reduce electricity consumption with the Ovo Greenlight tool and run a national tree-planting scheme, which commits them to plant a tree every year for every customer. They also offer innovative electric vehicle charging points, that provide solar power back to the National Grid.

Awards

Ovo Energy was awarded the prestigious “Company of the Decade” award in the BusinessGreen Leaders Awards 2020. They also featured in the Sunday Times’ Best 100 Companies to Work for 2017 and won multiple awards in uSwitch’s annual Energy Awards in 2020 including “Best Account Management, “ Best Smart Meter Experience” and “Best Billing Services”.
