Warehouse Energy Saving Tips

The first step to reducing your energy consumption is to understand your usage. This can help identify areas where energy efficiency can be improved. If you have a smart meter, you’ll be able to access your daily/hourly usage data. You will also be able to acces this information on a recent energy bill.

Once you’ve examined your energy consumption, it can be helpful to create targets to reduce your usage. It is also great to ensure that all staff are on board with your efforts.

According to the Carbon Trust, over half of the energy used by warehouses for lighting and heating. Whilst ensuring the environment is still safe, could be saved by adjusting usage practices and becoming more efficient.

You could increase your lighting efficiency by installing energy-efficient LED lights. These lights are 90% more efficient than standard incandescent light bulbs and they’re also longer lasting. It has been estimated that yearly savings of around £131 could be made by switching to LED or high frequency fluorescent lighting. Additionally, you should also make as much use of natural lighting as possible to help reduce energy consumption.

Heating and cooling tend to be the biggest costs for warehouses. These costs can be reduced by improving ventilation and making sure that exterior doors are not left open for long periods. If vehicles are regularly coming in and out of your premises, it may be worth segregating intake and dispatch areas from the rest of the warehouse. To further increase heating efficiency, ensure that your boiler and heating system are in good shape. You can do this by organising a yearly service and replacing your boiler system every 10-15 years.

Upgrading your electrical appliances can also help to lower your energy consumption and bills. For example, it is estimated that a conveyor system can account for 50% of a warehouses electrical usage [1]. Purchasing a more efficient model and controlling your usage can help to reduce this consumption.

If your business uses forklifts, using an electric vehicle instead could help you save. Electric forklifts tend to be less noisy, more manoeuvrable and they don’t create fumes. You should also consider how you schedule recharging, although you could benefit from taking advantage of government subsidies and investing in EV chargers.

Finally, you should encourage staff to avoid leaving electric devices such as computers, printers and fans on overnight to reduce energy wastage. You should also aim to turn electronics off during operating hours if they’re not in use. These simple measures can help to lower your energy consumption and help you save on your bills.
