Bulb Energy was founded in April 2013. They are one of the UK’s best-known private energy suppliers. They offer 100% renewable electricity and 100% carbon neutral gas. The company was previously operating under other names including Regent Power and Hanbury Energy.
As of 2022, the company has become owned by Octopus Energy, and as of 2023 customers are in the process of being migrated to Octopus.
Bulb Energy was established by Hayden Wood and Amit Gudka, two professionals with years of experience in the energy industry. The company was formed to revolutionise the energy sector and offer cheaper, greener and more simple tariffs to both business and domestic customers.
The supplier has a Trustpilot account, but it is not currently active at the time of writing.
Bulb has only one business energy contract. The supplier offers one variable tariff, which reflects the unit cost in the wholesale energy market. This contract is not fixed so you can leave at any time. If the price of gas and electricity is going to go up, Bulb will inform you in writing 30 days before the increased prices are applied.
All business tariffs offer 100% renewable electricity – supplied from sources like solar and wind power. They also offer gas that is 100% carbon neutral.
Standing charges for business customers for both gas and electricity are 27.4p a day. Unit rates vary depending on which region of the UK your business is based:

Like many of their competitors, Bulb offers 100% renewable electricity to customers – both domestic and business. That means that every unit that is sold by the company is backed by the generation of energy from a renewable resource (and evidenced by REGO certificates) such as wind or solar. Because of the way the National Grid works, this is different from guaranteeing that the energy that your business uses has been generated from renewable sources directly.
However, Bulb has made great strides in raising the renewable content of their fuel mix thanks to this strategy and can now claim 100% renewables. They work directly with a wide range of renewable energy producers across the UK. They also offer gas supplies that are 100% carbon neutral.
Bulb Energy won the Digital Agenda Impact award at the Impact Awards in 2017. They have also been runners-up in several categories at the uSwitch Energy Awards, including Supplier of the Year, in 2020 and 2021. These awards are based on responses from customer reviews.

If you are leaving a fixed-term contract early, you will likely need to pay an exit fee. You do not need to supply a final meter reading, as your new supplier will do so. Bulb will send you a final bill which you will need to pay
